Currently in her rookie year at the University of Guelph, former GYVA alumni Michaela Hellinga was recently named as the women’s athlete of the week for the University, following Guelph’s upset against the McMaster Marauders last Saturday.
The match saw a stellar performance from Hellinga, who came off the bench to score an impressive 16 points for her team, breaking career-high and team-high records. With this win under their belt, the Guelph Gryphons are now ranked 3rd in the OUA West Division.
“The intensity of our club practices is one of the main things that helped prepare me for my varsity career. My coach, Linda Melnick, always kept the practices running at a high tempo which prepared the team for high-intensity game situations, and incorporated lots of great drills which helped us constantly develop new skills. This has continued with me through to the varsity level and I am grateful that I got that experience ahead of time.“- Michaela Hellinga
